Growing up with a body of a confused baby giraffe, a set of crooked teeth, and bowl cut would be challenging for anyone, but things became especially interesting when my home life began to deteriorate.
Around the age of 16, I received a phone call telling me my dad had been sent to prison.
Before that call, the drugs had wreaked so much havoc that I would relentlessly rehearse in preparation for receiving a much bleaker message. (Since that time, I’m grateful to say that he has fully recovered and we have a beautiful relationship.)
With the instability at home, I was desperately looking for some sense of control that I could cling to.
Enter "fitness" (at least, what I thought fitness was) in the form of compensation.
I became obsessed and dove deep into the world of bodybuilding, working out constantly to create a strong body to compensate for the instability at home.
It worked, at least from the outside.
I packed on 60+ lbs of muscle within 18 months and was applauded for how I looked.
Yet inside, I felt insecure, imbalanced, and generally disconnected from my body.
It wasn’t long before my body started breaking down and I started to suffer from dislocating joints and chronic back pain.
That’s when it became clear to me that something needed to change.
I needed to change the way I was treating my body and re-form my definitions of strength and wellness. The ‘normal’ model of fitness wasn’t working.
This became the catalyst for my 20-year career as a manual therapist and movement coach working to discover what is essential for peak human vitality and performance and general physical inhabitance of our bodies.
And became the foundation for my work with clients, helping them to find ease in their own bodies and gain relationships with themselves by accessing the power of their own movement.
I’ve had the great fortune to work with some of the world’s top professional athletes and celebrities and host The Align Podcast where I’ve interviewed and collaborated with over 420+ of the world’s top wellness experts.
